Coaching on multi-level and multi-culture environments, we’ve come to find that a common factor, for coaching effect feasibility and sustainability is homeostasis.

“Homeostasis is the tendency of a system, esp. the physiological system, to maintain internal stability. Homeostasis applies to psychological states and behavior as well as to physical functioning.” (G.B.Leonard, 1992).

What we need to understand, during all coaching and mentoring interventions is how crucial is the force of homeostasis. Traditional interventions focus on designing and delivering a gradual and sustainable change. And this is about right. Gradualness adequacy is a fine measure to predict how the future will be shaped. And coaching is all about the future, in a sense where ASH (Attributes, Skills and Habits) is being projected to the client’s future status. Our coaching/mentoring intervention is on the projection itself, as mastery is being implemented to engage in an immersive procedure that will rearrange the sequence of factors that form the present state, to alter their size, significance, degree of influence, effectiveness, commitment and yes, homeostasis.

Rearranging ASH, in that sense, can really make a mess. Especially, when someone faces the backdoor effect. The backdoor effect can be experienced when one is fully aware that a change is crucial, or even implemented an exit strategy, but is not fully committed to a unique choice of solution between all available possibilities. So, he’s left in front of choices with homeostasis factor lurking embodied as procrastination and in turn as backdoor keeper. Coaches and mentors should be raising awareness of backdoor keepers. Change is a path to Alter Reality. Change leads to a door, where that door leads one road ends. Coaching and mentoring interventions should provide the experience of alternative realities as a process of visualizing and experiencing all Threads of Possibilities (TOP) by helping drawing pictures of possibilities and thus simulating the experience.

“Mental properties translate into real actions with real consequences” (R.Kegan & L.L.Lahey, 2009).

In that sense, the coach/mentor must plan a phase in/phase out from the context of experiences to a trans contextual web of possibilities, leading from Threads of Experience (TOE) to Threads of Possibilities (TOP), i.e. from TOE to TOP. Whatever changes on each possibility, must be expressed on all possibilities. The sum of all threads makes the total Web of Experiences (WE), which can be the client’s safety net.

What we will look into will be ways to invite thought to step forward from the world of becoming into that of being.
